Pakistan’s leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed is receiving medical attention in a Multan hospital after being sick during the current Test match against England.
After bowling thirty-one overs on the third day, Ahmed fell ill the next morning, complaining of bodily aches and a high fever. As such, on the fourth day, he refrained from joining his teammates on the field.
Abrar had several medical tests, as confirmed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) statement.
Once the test results are in, more information about his condition will be anticipated. Despite having a tough time in the current match, Abrar was a vital component of Pakistan’s bowling assault. Therefore, his removal from the field is troubling for the squad.
It was not Abrar Ahmed’s best performance in the encounter with England. The English batsmen, especially Joe Root and Harry Brook, pressed him hard and put much pressure on him.
To limit the damage, Abrar was forced to switch to a more defensive approach, bowling outside leg stump from around the wicket.
This reduced his economy rate but at the Cost of giving up 174 runs in 35 overs without taking a wicket.
This starkly contrasts his fantastic debut on the same field just a year prior, when he took England by surprise by taking 11 wickets in the game, including five wickets before the opening day’s lunch break.
Abrar Ahmed was immediately elevated to the top of Pakistan’s red-ball spin bowling attack following that 2022 debut performance.
He received much praise for his ability to induce spin and trick batters with his variations.
He soon established himself as an essential member of Pakistan’s bowling unit. Unfortunately, injuries have plagued him throughout his career, impeding his development and consistency.
Abrar has a history of injuries from his early childhood. He made his Pakistan Super League (PSL) debut for Peshawar Zalmi at 18, displaying his promise as a talented leg-spinner.
Regretfully, he had a chronic back injury shortly after making his debut, which prevented him from playing for several years.
He appeared to be getting back on track until he sustained a nerve injury in a tour match before Pakistan’s three-match Test series against Australia.
Due to this injury, he missed the entire tour and Pakistan’s opening Test match against Bangladesh in August.
Despite his injury troubles, Abrar is still a key member of Pakistan’s team, especially in spin.
Noman Ali and Zahid Mahmood were named in Pakistan’s squad for the current Test series against England, but they were released before kickoff. Pakistan now has few options for spin bowling; thus, Abrar’s illness is a significant setback for the team.
Both colleagues and supporters of Abrar Ahmed wish for a speedy recovery for him as the cricket world waits for more information regarding his condition.
Pakistan’s hopes of winning the series against England will depend on his return to the field, especially considering his track record of success and ability to be a disruptive force.
